This historic castle was established in 1895. It now stands as a bed and breakfast. Many who have frequented the property have reported paranormal activity like tapping on the shoulders and sightings of apparition dressed in clothing not of this time.

It is believed the spirits of Frank and Mary Henderson, the castle's original owners exists as well as the spirit of Clare Burleigh, a Spanish-American War veteran who served with the Henderson's son, that of a little girl, and even a dog.

  • Owner called police when we complained during checkout

Please don't stay here. The owner called the police when we complained during checkout. First of all, absolutely no paranormal activity was experienced, and the staff did not encourage the topic. The Henderson Castle is a beautiful property with bizarre, unfriendly management. We were unable to ever reach the business to cancel or inquire about their capacity, because the did not answer the phone at all for weeks when we tried to call. I would get an automated message saying, "This mailbox is full. Goodbye." The room was not clean. On top of the bed was a large blanket with a black-ish substance smeared on it. Staff promised to provide a replacement but none was provided. The included breakfast is just a "starter" on their menu, and that is accurate. It was about two tablespoons of fruit, two tablespoons of yogurt topped with a little granola, and a croissant. Our 8a breakfast was not delivered until 9a, because the staff didn't even start cooking it until 8:45a when I asked where it was. French toast and an omelette cost us $40. The business hosted a murder mystery party for 30+ people that they did not warn us about. There was no parking remaining at the business for guests staying the night, and we had to park elsewhere and hike up the hill. The party guests became increasingly loud from 6p until 11p as the business served more alcohol. The party used a PA system and simulated gunshots. I didn't sleep well. The following morning, I went downstairs to check out. I told the staff that we had a miserable time, and he argued with me that my complaints were not valid. When I brought up the dirty blanket, he said, "I'm afraid for my life right now. I'm going to get the owner." The owner came out and yelled at me, saying I was a "worthless human being" and that I "don't deserve service." The owner said I had two minutes to vacate the property before he would call the police. When I said that wasn't enough time to vacate, he called 911 with a trespassing complaint. Three policemen arrived and escorted my wife and I out of the building. The Kalamazoo police were professional and polite about the whole thing. Well done! I'm still confused why the staff and owner escalated the issue when I was already there to check out. I don't understand why it was necessary to be verbally abusive. I don't want anyone else to ever have this experience.

  • Growling Sound From Beneath Blankets

My wife and I stayed in the Mayfair Suite... at about 3:30 AM we heard a growling sound from beneath the blankets on my wife’s side of the bed. It was a very low bellowing sound that you could feel reverberating through the bed. Seconds later there was on odd, almost foul smell throughout the room. It was like the scent of stale must, sweat, and everyone’s dinner seeping out into the hallways of a multicultural urban apartment building. There was also a couple cold spots. One in front of the door, and another that was in front of our window. Odd experience to say the least.

  • Vineyard suite

My boyfriend and I spent the night in the Vineyard suite. We had no idea the castle was haunted. Throughout the night we heard the toilet run off and on and didn’t think anything of it. Around 3 am, my boyfriend saw an apparition of a man’s face. At 5 am, I got up to use the bathroom and I heard a man whisper “hey.” When we woke up around 8 am, our room was freezing cold, much colder than it was the evening prior.

  • Henderson Castle. Activity in Cottage, ballroom, and honeymoon suite

Oldest daughter’s wedding was at Henderson Castle this weekend. My wife and I stayed in Cottage A and did not expect to experience anything as we were on the grounds, but not in the main building. The first night as we slept, my wife felt some weigh on her arm as if something was laying on it. The second night I was laying in bed while my wife was sleeping, and I literally felt like something jumped up on the bed next to my shoulder and stepped across my pillow. The way it landed on the bed, I could definitely feel three feet land just pile out dogs and cats do at home. One of my other daughters heard laughter in the honeymoon suite as well as clear footsteps in heels across the ballroom floor
